The Cost of Space

There are various factors to consider when you are looking to rent property as you will have a lot of decisions to make. For this reason, the task of finding an apartment should not be taken lightly.

Initially, what most people do is look at what they desire, break down what they are looking for in a property, and work out whether it is possible. But, this is not the best house hunting practice, in fact, it so far off the mark that it can lead to many complications and time delays that just were not necessary.

Price in rental properties are normally governed by the actual size of the property rather than the amount of rooms.  In truth, you could have a three bed property on the market for considerably less than a spacious one bed apartment; strange, but true.  So, the first question shouldn’t be what I want, but what can I afford.

Your budget will ultimately determine what property you can afford.  So if you have your eyes on that large one bed condo, you need to do the math.

Working out a budget is relatively simple if you know what your financial state is.  If you do not, it will take a little while longer to work out.  Anyone wanting to rent or buy a home should really have some idea of how they stand on money matters.  If you don’t, then you should sort this out and keep a record of the details so you do not forget.  Take into account every single penny that passes through those hands each month.  Every outgoing payment, as well as all the money you have coming in, should be considered.  You cannot afford to cut corners here; you must account for everything or else you will be working on a false economy.  It may seem as though it is not worth counting those little expenditures but they all add up, and they all make a difference.

So now that you have a budget, you can have a look at the properties you are interested in.  It may well be that you can stretch your money in order to get what you want. However, if you find that you are coming up short, you need to go back to the drawing board.  Look at your finances again, can you make sufficient cuts or consolidate anything to free up more cash?  You will be surprised at the amount of money you can save if you put your mind to it.

If you cannot find extra money, you need to re-evaluate your desires; look to find a property you can really afford and one which you will be happy with.  It is not always possible to get the dream home we want the first time around. However, if you are determined enough, you will work harder to secure your ideal rental property.
